He knows that knowledge of Islam is not a guarantee for a more tolerant attitude to the religion. Yet prof. dr. Anton Wessels, professor of Religious Studies at the Free University, considers it to be his mission to inform people about this belief. On Wednesday 18 September he can be heard in the Senaatszaal in the Auditorium at 20.00 hours to deliver the lecture ‘The fundamental pillars of Islam’.
“Apparently we have a need for an enemy”, says Wessels. “When the ‘red danger’ disappeared, there was a need for a new one. Islam proved a good candidate: the ‘green danger’. Willy Claes (former Secretary-General of NATO) and other political leaders have even propagated that. It is shocking to see that such imputations are almost taken for facts.”
Over the past few years Wessels has developed into an expert in the field of Islam.
