with talk of turkey cooperating in a possible strike against iran's nuclear reactor, i am reminded of a story i read in the forward in 1994. the article confirmed what i had previously learned by rumor. kemal ataturk, "father of all turks" and founder of modern turkey was descended from spanish jews who had settled in salonika under the ottomans and followed the false messiah shabtai tsvi.
it was ataturk who ended the 1300 year old caliphate and made the military guardian of turkish secularism.
