ancak buzullarla kaplı ülkeye grönland diye isim veren adam buraya düz topraklar dediyse, kesin dağtan kayadan geçilmiyordur herhalde. amerika'nın doğu kıyılarında olduğu kesindir ancak tam yeri hakkında spekülasyonlar vardır.
buraya yerleşen viking öncüleri kendilerini sürekli rahatsız eden amerikan yerlilerine "huzursuzluk getiren" anlamına gelen skraeling adını vermişlerdir.
hakkındaki bir diğer teori de izlanda sagaları'nda geçen üzüm bahçeleri sonucu vin(üzüm) diyarı isminin verilmiş olduğudur. ancak vikingler'in yerleşim yeri kurdukları newfoundland ile ona en yakın üzüm yetişen bölge olan new brunswick birbirine oldukça uzaktır ve vikingler'in bu bölgeye indiklerine dair bir kanıt yoktur.
