robert de niro'nun kariyeri boyunca neredeyse her filminde olduğu üzere yine uzun soluklu bir monolog sahnesi vardır, enfestir ve aynen şu şekildedir:
suppose you're in your office,
you ve been fighting duels all day you re exhausted.
this is you.
the girl comes in.
she doesn't see you.
she takes off her gloves, opens her purse, dumps it out on the table.
you watch her.
this is you.
she has two dimes, a matchbox, and a nickel.
she leaves the nickel on the table,
puts the two dimes back into her purse,
takes the gloves to the stove, opens it, puts them inside.
she lights a match.
suddenly, the telephone rings:
she picks it up. she listens. she says:
"i ve never owned a pair of black gloves in my life."
hangs up, kneels by the stove, lights another match.
suddenly you notice... there's another man in the room,
watching every move the girl makes. [kısa bir sessizlik]
- what happens? [karşısındaki salt sesten ibaret kel, ayyaş senarist boş ve meraklı gözlerle sorar]
ve de niro devam eder...
i don't know. i was just making pictures. [dışarı çıkar, devasa ve tamamen boş film setinde tek başına yürür]

f. scott fitzgerald ' ın bitmemiş romanıdır . Fitzgerald ' ın ölümünden bir sene sonra yayıncısı dağınık notlarını bulmuş ve bir araya getirerek yayınlamıştır . Romanda 1930 ' lu yıllardaki Hollywood ve sinema dünyasının acımasız yüzü anlatılmaktadır . Roman kahramanının adı ise ; Monroe Stahr ' dır.
türkçeye son patron olarak çevrilen film. Actors Studio'nun da kurucusu olan Kayseri doğumlu, Rum asıllı Amerikalı yönetmen Elia Kazan'ın yönettiği filmin uyarlama senaryosunu Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü sahibi ingiliz yazar Harold Pinter yazmıştır.
