aim-9 sidewinder kısa menzilli infrared güdümlü havadan havaya füze. ır(infrared yani kızılötesi, ısıya duyarlı). ısı güdümlü olan bu füze düşman hava araçlarının motorlarının yada gövdesinin ısısına yönelir. 1956 yılında abd envanterine girmiştir. menzili 10 ila 18 mil arasında irtifaya göre değişir.rivayetlere göre bugüne kadar 110 bin adet üretilmiştir. dünyada kısa menzilli havadan hava füze denilince akla sidewinder gelir. kısa menzilin atasıdır. bir çok versiyonları üretilmiştir. enson üretilen aim-9x in karaya atışları denenmiştir. bir testte ise denizde belli bir süratte seyreden botu vurmuştur. sidewinder füzesinin ır güdümlü oluşundan dolayı füzeden kurtulmak için güneşe doğru tırmanma, flare atma taktikleri mevcuttur. tabiki aim-9x anormal manevraları ve geliştirilmiş güdümü ile artık güneşe yönelme yada flarelardan dolayı aklının karışması artık zordur. aim-9x normal sidewinderlar gibi kullanılabildiği gibi kaska monteli nişangah sistemi ile düşman tam üstünüzden arkanıza doğru geçerken bile ateşleyip düşmanı imha edebilirsiniz. dogfightların vazgeçilmezidir.
