If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two ;
Thy soul, the fix'd foot, makes no show
To move, but doth, if th' other do.
And though it in the centre sit,
Yet, when the other far doth roam,
It leans, and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.
Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
Like th' other foot, obliquely run ;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,
And makes me end where I begun.
donne şiiri karısı anne için yazmıştır. iş için fransa ya gidecek olan donne bu şiiri ile o sırada hamile olan karısı anne ye ağlamamasını, feryat figan etmemesini söyler. bunun için haklı sebepleri vardır kendince. çünkü onlar ne kadar uzak olsalar da olsunlar ruhen birbirlerine bağlıdırlar ve fiziksel uzaklıklar onların aşkını zayıflatamayacaktır. bu yönleriyle sıradan aşıklardan ayrılırlar. donne aşklarını ne kadar inceltilse de kopmayan altına, pergele benzetir. mecazlarla dolu bir şiirdir.

john donne metafor olarak pergeli kullanmıştır bu şiirde. sevgililerden birisi pergelin sabit ayağı, diğeri de dönüp dolaşıp aynı yere gelerek daire oluşturan parçasıdır. bu pergel metaforunu türk edebiyatında da ömer hayyam da dörtlüklerinden birisinde kullanmıştır;
"sevgili, seninle ben pergel gibiyiz:
iki başımız var, bir tek bedenimiz.
ne kadar dönersem döneyim çevrende:
er geç baş başa verecek değil miyiz?"
bi adamın sevdiği kadına mecburi bi ayrılık yüzünden veda ederken söylediği, söylerken de içine sadece o'nun anlayabileceği anlamlar gizlediği büyülü sözler.
her bir dizesini tam da demek istediği şeyi onun gibi eşsiz bi ahenkle söyleyerek yeniden yazmak biraz zor...
deneme cüretim bende saklı;
"gerçekten sevenler fısıldar gibi gider, ilan etmeye muhtaç değildir sevgisini, ay altındaki diğer sıradan sevgililer gibi..." der ve başlar;
"ama biz, sevgilim, öyle sızdık ki birbirimize, bizim aklımız bile almaz, bu eller, gözler, dudaklar nasıl da kaybolur birbirlerinde..."
" bizim ruhumuz bir sevgilim, bu bir ayrılık değil, olsa olsa altının ezilerek, coğrafyasını genişleterek işlenmesi, incelmesi; daha da zarif, daha da belirgin olması adına"
ve çembere gelir sıra, ancak milimi milimine başladığı yerde biterse kusursuz olacak olan,sonsuzluğun ebedi simgesine... ve tabii ki compasses* metaforuna;
"biz bi pergelin iki ayağıyız seninle, sen sabitimsin, ben yolculuğumu sayende tamamlarım ancak, sen eğilirsin belki, zor olur dayanman dairemiz büyüdükçe, ama çizimi bitip ben odağına; yanına dönünce, beni dimdik karşılayacak olan da sen değil misin..."
