12 nisan 1940 chicago doğumlu jazz piyanisti. 1963 yılında miles davis'in ikinci kurduğu beşlisine katılarak dikkatleri üzerine çekti. beşlinin diğer üyeleri 17 yaşındaki tony williams (davul), ron carter (bass), wayne shorter (tenor saksofon). eğitimine her jazz piyanisti gibi klasik müzik ile başladı. 1962 yılında ilk albümünü çıkardı.
