1943 yılında bu şehirden 50.000 Yahudiyi alıp Auschwitz'e götürmüşler. Geriye o kamptan sadece 1200 Selanikli sağ kurtulabilmiş. Yunan gazetesi Katimerini yazıyor:
Of the 50,000 Thessaloniki Jews deported to the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in 1943, only around 1,200 survived.
