31 ekim-7 kasım 1917'de filistin cephesindeki 3. gazze savaşı'nı kazandı (daha önce bölgeye olan ingiliz taaruzları başarısız olmuştu) ve kuzeye ilerleyerek aralık ayı başlarında kudüs'ü ele geçirdi. usta bir süvari generali olmasına rağmen kudüs'e olan saygısını kudüs'e maiyeti ve müttefikleri ile birlikte yaya girerek gösterdi.
